Ionia, Mich. [AP] - A preliminary hearing for the 16-year-old son of a Michigan State Trooper suspected of killing his father is to continue in Ionia this week.

Richard Karbowski, 36, was found shot to death by state troopers who went to his home Saturday morning after the veteran police officer failed to show up for his midnight shift.

His son, who was not identified, was taken into custody several hours later, officials said, and brought before Probate Judge Greer Smith in the afternoon.

His hearing was adjourned until Thursday and no charges were formally brought against the boy. He was remanded to juvenile authorities by Judge Smith.

Cmdr. Thomas Herbert of the Ionia State Police post said the youth was at the family's home in Saranac when troopers arrived. Karbowski was shot with his own service revolver, police said.

An autopsy revealed Karbowski was dead of gunshot wounds in his chest and hip.

The trooper's wife and their two youngest children, aged 12 and 3, were visiting her family in Bay City when the slaying occurred, Herbert said.

Troopers drove to Bay City to inform the dead trooper's wife and children, and to bring them home. An older daughter, aged 19, lives in Eagle in Clinton County.

Karbowski, a native of Bay City, was a seven-year veteran of the State Police. He served two years at the Gladstone Post in the Upper Peninsula and the last five years at Ionia.

Last fall, the Michigan Department of State Police cited him for meritorious service for his part in solving a series of burglaries.

The burglary investigation coordinated with other officers, culminated in the arrests of persons believed involved in more than 50 crimes, authorities said, and spurred the recovery of $5,000 worth of property.

He was also named "Trooper of the Year" by the Hastings chapter of the Michigan Jaycees.

Friends of the trooper said the teenager was living at home, but had been depressed recently, apparently with family problems. One said he didn't believe the boy had been in previous trouble with the law.

"I am under the impression that they were a close knit family," said a friend of Karbowski's at the Ionia post. "They had a trailer and went on vacations together."

Trooper David Wagner said Karbowski "broke me in when I first came here. He was a good trooper. He would have made a good detective."

Karbowski graduated from Bay City St. Ladislaus High School, now called All Saints.

A convoy of police from municipal, county, and state law enforcement agencies are planning a convoy to the funeral, which was tentatively set for Tuesday in Bay City, officials said.
