Ten years ago this month, Shelby Township police Officer David Essad was arrested for assaulting his wife, Julie. Essad's assault on Julie was so savage and brutal, that he pulled hair from her scalp and broke her nose.
Although MIOIDV and others have widely circulated the picture of Essad with Julie's blood on his hands to officials throughout Michigan, they have failed to take necessary actions to protect victims of OIDV or to hold officers criminally responsible for OIDV. Instead, since Officer Essad's attack on his ex-wife, state legislators have taken steps to further protect officers who are arrested for OIDV - such as in 2013 when Michigan state legislators closed criminal proceedings to the public, of domestic violence cases pleaded under MCL 769.4a via ACT 550.
Needless to say, by silencing victims of MIOIDV and allowing abusive police officers to be above the law, Michigan state legislators and officials have created the mentality where officers know that no one will do anything to them - they are invincible
