A few months ago, I came across the following news article: "Domestic Violence in America with Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.), Margarita Guzmán, Rachel Louise Snyder & Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.)". [Washington Post. October 21, 2021].
I clicked on the video because I was curious as to Michigan Congresswoman Dingell's view on OIDV, considering:
- Michigan has an OIDV crisis with the Lautenberg DV Gun Ban not being adhered to in OIDV convictions;
- OIDV cases being pled down via MCL 769.4a [Michigan's Lautenberg Loophole] to allow abusing officers to retain their guns and jobs despite the Lautenberg;
- AND, the practical decriminalization of DV crimes by MI legislators, due to MCL 769.4a - where any DV offense less than murder - is only punishable with probation, with the charges discharged/expunged after completion of sentence.
I did that 'head-tilt are you shitting me' reaction, as I listened to Dingell cite stats on the danger of abusers and guns, as she emphasized the need for the authorization of one her bills - which happens to be one of a few red-flag laws which legislators have attached to the VAWA Reauthorization Bill.
My thoughts on Dingell: If she was that concerned about the dangers to victims when their abuser has a gun, then why has she (and all other supporters/co-sponsors of the VAWA bills) sat back and done nothing when convicted abusing LE officers are handed back their jobs and guns - with no thought or concern of OIDV victims' safety?
Is VAWA really about protecting victims of domestic violence - or is the reauthorization act a vehicle for leftists' agendas and politics?
